A German couple died after a pickup truck hit them on a zebra crossing in the Khao Lak area of Phang Nga province on the evening of October 2, 2026. The driver did not stop. He surrendered to police the next day. Police are still investigating, and blood test results are pending.
What happened
The couple, aged 64 and 63, were crossing the road at a zebra crossing in the Khao Lak area, Takua Pa district, at around 9:30pm on October 2, 2026. A pickup truck hit them as they crossed.
Witnesses helped the injured couple. They were taken to Andaman Hub Medical Centre with serious injuries, and both later died during treatment.
According to witnesses, the driver did not stop or help. CCTV reportedly shows the truck speeding away. The footage also shows the pedestrian signal turning red for vehicles, and the pickup went through the crossing without stopping.
The driver
The driver is a 37-year-old man named Weera. He surrendered to Khao Lak Police Station on October 3, the day after the crash.
He told police he had been to a medical appointment at Takua Pa Hospital and was driving home to Lam Kaen subdistrict, Mueang district. According to his account:
- He saw the two Germans standing on a traffic island, about to cross.
- He did not notice the light turn red.
- He saw that the next traffic light was green and kept driving at speed.
- He did not stop because he was in shock.
The investigation
Alcohol and drug tests were reportedly negative. A blood sample was sent to Takua Pa Hospital, and the results are pending.
Channel 7 reported the initial charges as:
- Reckless driving causing death
- Reckless driving that could endanger people or property
- Failing to assist victims or notify police after a road accident
Police are still gathering evidence and waiting for the test results.
What this means for visitors
- A red signal for traffic is not a guarantee. The crossing and its pedestrian signal did not protect these pedestrians. Drivers can run red lights, so check that vehicles are actually stopping before you step off the kerb.
- Take extra care at night and at crossings with a central island. Both are higher risk. Wait for approaching vehicles to slow or stop.
- If you are involved in or witness a crash:
- Call police and emergency services.
- Note the vehicle details.
- Look for CCTV. In this case it led to the driver being identified and surrendering within a day.
- Fleeing a crash adds a separate charge in Thailand. The offence is failing to assist or notify police.
- Khao Lak has a hospital that handles emergencies. It is Andaman Hub Medical Centre.
- Travel insurance with medical cover matters for road accidents.
