Two German tourists were killed in a hit-and-run while crossing a pedestrian crossing on Phetkasem Road in Khao Lak, Phang Nga, on the night of Friday 2 October 2026. A white Mazda BT-50 pickup with Bangkok plates reportedly hit them and drove off. As of the latest report, police had not identified the driver.
What happened
At about 21:45 on 2 October 2026, Gabriela Gulden (63) and Wilbert Schwiers (64) were crossing Phetkasem Road at a pedestrian crossing. The crossing is in front of Orchid restaurant in Khuekkhak, Takua Pa district, on the stretch of road heading toward Thai Mueang district. The incident was reported on 3 October 2026 at 13:15.
According to witnesses, a white Mazda BT-50 pickup with Bangkok licence plates hit the pair. It then accelerated toward Thai Mueang without stopping to help.
Both were found seriously injured at the scene and taken to Khao Lak Medical Centre, where they later died. They had been staying at a Khao Lak hotel from 30 September to 9 October.
Police investigation
Police documented the scene, drew up an accident map and had a doctor examine the bodies. They are collecting evidence and questioning witnesses. They are also trying to identify the driver and locate the truck.
The case is being investigated as negligent driving causing death. The driver has not been identified or caught as of the report.
Staying safe on the road
The points below are general safety advice, not part of the news report.
- Pedestrian crossings in Thailand do not reliably protect people on foot. Drivers often don't yield.
- Take extra care on Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) and other main roads, especially at night. Make eye contact, wait for traffic to stop fully, and cross one lane at a time.
- Witnesses and police reports matter in hit-and-run cases. If you see one, note the plate and vehicle description.
- In an accident, call 191 for police or 1669 for a medical emergency.
