Thai Flight Attendant Arrest Triggers Tighter Airport Security Across Thailand

What Happened
On June 25, 2026, a Thai Airways flight attendant known as "Mina" was arrested at Melbourne Airport. Customs officers found roughly 1 kg of heroin concealed inside 12 tote bags she was carrying.
Investigators traced the supply chain back to Thailand. A 47-year-old man named Uthai travelled to Phayao on June 20 to collect the heroin, then transported it to Bangkok. He hired a third man, known as "Pae", to drive him to Mina's condominium, where he delivered a box of tote bags before her departure. Uthai told investigators he did not know Mina personally, and that he had completed similar deliveries on two previous occasions, receiving around 60,000 baht per delivery.
The Government Response
On Friday, July 3, 2026, Thailand's Narcotics Prevention and Suppression Committee held a meeting to address the case. Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat attended on behalf of Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.
Siripong summarised the challenge plainly: "Drug trafficking networks continually adapt their methods to evade security procedures, making it necessary for authorities to strengthen screening measures at airports nationwide."
New Security Measures
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) is introducing several changes:
- Over 60 K9 units from the Royal Thai Police will be deployed at airports, alongside additional dogs from the Customs Department
- X-ray screening officers will receive increased training
- Intelligence sharing on suspected drug trafficking will be improved
- Cabin crew bags are now subject to additional scrutiny
- A possible ban on shopping courier services used by cabin crew is under consideration
