Carman has told police he acted in self-defence. Compensation discussions with the victim's family are reportedly possible, though police have confirmed that any financial agreement would not stop prosecution. It could, however, be considered by the court during sentencing alongside a guilty plea or evidence of remorse. Carman has been separated from the general prison population for his own safety.
